Gall Bladder Removal Surgery

Cholecystectomy is the surgical procedure for removal of the gall bladder. During this procedure, the gall bladder will be permanently removed. The procedure of gall bladder removal can be done Laparoscopically or by open surgery.

Today most cases of gall bladder are done by laparoscopic method. Laparoscopic surgery
combines the advantages of minimal cuts ( usually 4 cuts : two are 10mm size each and two are
5mm size each ), lesser pain, faster recovery, and also the advantages of a magnified view at
surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery is NOT minor surgery . Laparoscopic surgery needs adequate training and
experience to be able to work with the advanced equipement.
However once the technique is mastered Laparoscopic surgery has the advantages of better
and magnified field of vision, and minimal scars and faster recovery.

Gall Bladder removal is one of the commonest surgical procedures, and there are no longterm
consequences to removal of the gall bladder.

Gall Bladder removal is not associated with weight gain

Though in most cases a video recording of all laparoscopic cases is done a copy of the same will
usually not be issued to you. Live surgical videos are not for light viewing and can in some cases
be disturbing.

You will be on a soft low fat diet for 2 weeks and thereafter over a period of the next 30 days
can go back to your normal diet.

You are adviced to rest at home for 10 days after discharge
You can drive light vehicles after 15 days
You can drive two wheelers after 30 days
You can go back to all exercises after 30 days of surgery

In the area where the gall bladder is removed titanium or plastic clips may be seen
Titaneum clips are permanent and will be visible on future xrays
The small skin cuts will need stitches

It is generally safe to go through metal detectors if you have titanium clips in your body.
Titanium is non-ferromagnetic, which means it is not attracted to magnets and is unlikely to set
off a metal detector. However, it's always a good idea to inform the security personnel about
any medical implants or devices before going through a metal detector. This can help ensure a
smooth and efficient screening process.

Generally titanium clips do not cause interference, but best to inform your Radiologist if you
have such clips inside
